About Chaga

The black gold of Northern forests

Deep in the northern forests, an unusual mushroom with a dark, almost black appearance grows on birch trunks. It is the chaga mushroom (Inonotus obliquus) — one of the world's most popular functional mushrooms.

Chaga is a mushroom that grows on living birch trees in cold climate regions. Unlike the classic mushrooms we see in the forest, chaga forms a dark, rough formation on the bark of the tree. It grows very slowly and can develop for several years, absorbing valuable substances from the birch.

Although it may not look particularly appealing at first glance, chaga has been highly valued in Northern Europe, the Baltics, and Finland for centuries. Today, it has become one of the most sought-after ingredients in the functional mushroom category worldwide.

Chaga

The black gold of Northern forests

Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) develops mainly on birch trees in cold northern climates and has a long tradition of use in Northern and Eastern European cultures. Its dark, irregular sclerotium looks very different from a conventional mushroom, and its composition is equally distinctive. Modern research has identified several groups of compounds in chaga, including polysaccharides, phenolic compounds and triterpenoids, while recent reviews continue to explore their structure and biological activity. At xdose, chaga is especially meaningful because it connects Northern nature, traditional knowledge and modern functional-food research in one ingredient. We do not present chaga as a medicine or turn laboratory findings into promises about a finished drink. Instead, we value it as a genuinely distinctive botanical material with a rich research story — one that belongs naturally in our strongest ginger-led shot and in the wider xdose story of purposeful ingredients.
